European debts back in focus; good odds for more MAS tightening this year

(SINGAPORE) The Singapore dollar hit a year-high against the euro yesterday as markets grew increasingly anxious over the ability of some European nations to raise funds this week.

Worries about upcoming bond sales by Portugal, Spain and Italy sank the euro to S$1.68 at 8pm yesterday. It has fallen significantly from its high of S$2.02 at the start of last year.

This is Singapore's year, predicts economists as Singapore "upgraded its 2010 forecast to a blistering 13 to 15 per cent expansion", which is a steep rise from an earlier estimate of 7-9 per cent growth, AFP reported in mid-July.

Despite worries over the US economy and the European debt crisis, the island state is set to overtake China's growth of 10 per cent.

SINGAPORE - The latest flash estimates for November from the National University of Singapore (NUS) show that prices of non-landed private homes in Singapore's Central region (districts 1-4 and 9-11) have appreciated 7.9 per cent in the first 11 months of this year from end-2009.
